What is encryption and decryption? |
Encryption simply means scrambling data, like the data found in a word processing document, a graphic, or a spreadsheet, such that only those who know how the data was scrambled (i.e. have the key to the scrambling) can unscramble it. The data is scrambled using a password, so that only people who know the password (and have the unscramble key) can unscramble the data and use it. Unscrambling data, the reverse of scrambling, is known as "decryption".
After you create the login key, click Finish; the VME Office™ main window is opened and a VME icon is placed in the system tray on the Windows Taskbar. Two icons are place on your desktop: VME Office™ and VME Shredder. Upon activating the wizard, VME Office™ also performs a self-test for all cryptographic algorithms used in the program.

What is profile and keybook? |
VME Office™ allows you to use multiple passwords to secure your data. These passwords, as well as other encryption information, are stored in profiles. VME Office™ profiles are, in turn, organized into keybooks. Each keybook can contain many profiles. You access profiles and key books from the Keybook Organizer on the left side of the VME Office™ window. When you encrypt data, the profile that you have selected is used. To decrypt that data, the same profile must be used.

What are these file extensions, original/source files, the encrypted file and VME office? |
VME Office™ works with two types of files: original or source files, and encrypted files. Original or source files refer to the unencrypted file as it exists before using VME Office™. Encrypted files are created by VME Office™ and are the encrypted versions of the original files. VME Office™ creates one encrypted file for each file encrypted. For example, if two text files are encrypted, two encrypted files result from the encryption operation. Files encrypted by VME Office™ have the .vme file extension and the VME Office™ encrypted file icon. Some files have the .wrp file extension that is used with the SendTo function.

What is digital signature? |
A digital signature is simply a tool that ensures that electronic data which has been sent to you by another party has not been altered since the digital signature was applied.
Why is this useful?
First, in the digital age, business can't wait for mail deliveries and couriers to deliver such items as signed purchase orders, letters of intent, etc. When our partners, customers, employers are a single click away no matter where they are geographically, business must move at the speed of a single click. New laws have taken these new conditions into account and are making digital signatures as valid as signatures on paper.
Second, there are many ways to intercept a document in transit and alter it. Unfortunately we live in a world where competitors of all sorts will go to great lengths to gain an advantage. Alteration of digital documents can cause great harm. A verified digital signature ensures that alterations have not been performed since the signature was applied.
Third, a verified Digital Signature confers ‘non-deniability' on an electronic document. The digital signer of an email or other electronic document cannot plausibly deny that they did not sign a document on which their signature has been verified. In many courts of law, such a claim is not regarded as valid.

Signature can become invalid either of two reasons:
1. Document was changed
2. Certificate of signer was revoked, expired etc.
When 2 is true, verifier can check the exact reason in Signer's information and decide whether or not to trust the document.
On VME Verify you can see following information:
Signature is Valid / Invalid
Handwritten signature if exists
Signer's information
Certificate info
Certificate status
Time stamp - exact time of signature creation in GMT format
